Lawn-Boy 17732
Pros:
  • Despite being gas-powered, it is CARB compliant.
  • Powerful Kohler 149 cc engine is as reliable as engines can get
  • 3 Year Tru-Start Agreement: Lawn-Boy will fix the problem for free if the mower does not start in one or two pulls
  • 21 inch tri-cut steel deep dome
  • Mulch, bag or side discharge
  • Great price

Cons:

  • The Lawn-Boy 17732 is a little bit odd. They could have given it one lever height adjustment just like other mowers but it has 2 point height adjustment.
  • It would have probably been easier to give it electric start than form an tru-start agreement. Whatever.....the thing is, despite a couple of minor flaws, it’s a good lawn mower.

Lawn-Boy 17732 Basic Info

The Lawn-Boy 17732 is a rear wheel drive, gas powered mower with a 149 cc Kohler engine. It has been designed predominantly for residential properties with small to medium sized lots or yards.

If you are looking to tackle a large hilly landscape with your mower, then we suggest that you look at the Honda HRX217K5VKA.

Even though electric mowers have become immensely popular among customers, many still prefer gas-powered machines as they do well in almost all conditions.

Even if the grass is very tall and thick or if it’s wet and slippery, a gas-powered engine just goes on and on, sort of like a honey badger with dogged determination.

The Lawn-Boy 17732 does not have just any engine, it’s a Kohler engine and we know that Kohler is a highly reputable and reliable brand. So yes, the motor is very capable but what about the other bits? We shall soon find out, by the end of this review.

Some areas in the US have restrictions on the use of gas-powered mowers in urban localities. Machines with high emissions are classified as farming equipment and hence, they can land the owner in trouble if used within city limits.

Now, the good news is that our Lawn-Boy meets the very stringent emission regulations in the State of California (CARB compliant).

In short, you can use this bad boy even if you are an urban dweller! Now that we have that sorted, let’s check out the features, pros, cons etc.

Lawn-Boy 17732 Features:

6.5 pound-feet of Torque:

The 149cc engine produces ample power, 6.5 pound-feet of gross torque to be exact. This propels the mower over slight inclines and slopes without a problem.

Tall and thick grass is no match for the Lawn-Boy. It even does well if the grass is slippery due to dew or if it has rained a bit recently.

Some mowers really run out of breath if conditions are anything but ideal. However, as we all know, in the real world, it’s not always sunny (even in California) and plots are rarely 180 degrees flat.

This is precisely why it’s good to have something that has the capacity to perform even when the goings gets tough. The whole concept of a self-propelled mower is to make the job easier.

If the mower suddenly transforms into a push mower at the sight of a slight incline, it defeats the whole purpose of a self-propelled model! The Lawn-Boy 17732 gets the job done without a hassle.

Rear Wheel Drive:

Rear wheel drive ensures that the Lawn-Boy can hold its own on slushy bits.

We all know that gas powered mowers are usually quite bulky and heavy. This makes them hard to steer. However, this one weighs only 66 pounds.

That’s on the lighter side and aids the driver in maneuvering the machine around corners easily. We have got a powerful engine, light weight, and good steering. Things are looking promising for the Lawn-Boy!

Variable Speed:

The mower matches the speed of the driver. So whether you’re looking to get the job done quickly or you want to take your time and soak in some Sun, the Lawn-Boy is up to the task. Get the job done at your own pace, without breaking a sweat.

It’s the little things like these that make mowing a pleasant experience rather than an arduous task.

21 Inch Tri-Cut Dome:

The 21 inch steel deep dome steel provides great coverage. Steel domes are incredibly robust and even though they do not come with a lifetime warranty as the Nexite composite domes on heavy duty Honda mowers, they’re just fine for residential properties.

The powerful and amazing Tri-Cut feature delivers the desired look, each and every time.

3-in-1:

The Lawn-Boy 17732 is a versatile mower. It offers three options – bagging, mulching or side discharge. If you’re hosting a barbecue or a party, you can choose to bag all the clippings for a sharp and clean look.

However, if it’s the beginning of the dry season or if you’re going on vacation for a few days, mulching is a great idea as it will nourish the soil and prevent it from drying out too much.

Tru-Start:

When we found out that this lawn mower does not have an electric start button, we were a bit perplexed. Pulling on a cord is fun and all but not having electric start makes a model feel really dated...in our humble opinion.

However, our spirits were enlivened when we discovered about this three year Tru-Start guarantee. Basically, Lawn-Boy has assured that the engine will start in just one or two tugs and if it doesn’t, they have promised to repair it for free!

Now, Tru-Start doesn’t grant you the convenience of an electric start but it ensures that you will not have to yank 15 times before the motor splutters to life.

2 Point Height Adjustment:

The height can be adjusted quickly to 6 positions, ranging from 1.25 to 3.75 inches. So whether you’re going for a nice, lush look or a very short trim, this mower has got you covered.

Other mowers have one lever adjustment so we don’t see any reason why Lawn-Boy couldn’t use the same approach. However, we’re not complaining much.

High Traction Wheels:

The front wheels are 7 inches in diameter while the rear ones, 8 inches. They offer a good amount of grip even if it’s dewy and make the mower feel very secure at all times.

Bailout Lever:

The mower stops instantly once you release the bailout lever.

Perfect if you come across an obstacle in your path or if you receive a phone call and have to answer it immediately. This is an important safety feature.

Lawn-Boy 17732  Review & Final Verdict:

The price is so good, it’s impossible not to recommend the Lawn-Boy 17732.

The performance is also up to the mark. Overall, it's a really solid lawn mower.
